Our Shared Identity

(Or should I say, “Our Shredded Identity”?)

The old proverb “Birds of a feather flock together” suggests that creatures and/or beings (typically humans) of similar type and character, will naturally tend to mutually associate. For the most part, and for all the right reasons, that’s the way it is in the animal kingdom. But not so much in the human sector…for all the wrong reasons. Mmmm, are birds smarter than us?

As seen in our country’s bureaucrat’s shamefully mishandling the affairs of government and the media’s biased reporting and refusing to mention the dire need for knowing God as Creator and Judge of this world’s final judgement, we are in a time of intense political and societal divisiveness. The Bible offers the right path toward a special unity for all…as does common sense…if we had enough honest sense to admit it.

“United we stand, divided we fall.”

“Separatism…is the abstraction of a negation, a mere shadow of a shadow.” -Amiel

We’ve seen what polarized separatism has done to our country’s government. Political and societal divisions often stem from selfishness and pride. While political debates may be part of human existence, rather than engage in polarizing rhetoric, we need to embody the fruit of the Spirit, which includes love, peace, patience, and kindness (Gal. 5:22). These virtues reflect in a powerful and positive way how to build bridges rather than walls.

Even biblical unity isn’t so much a pure uniformity as it is a harmony reflecting God’s love and purpose for our coming together to accomplish great and worthwhile things. But, since so many refuse to acknowledge God’s rightful place in His creation and society, there will always be a large segment who, out of selfish egotism, continue to be envious, mean-spirited, and who, acting ungodly, would keep us divided and weak.

“May the Lord make your love for one another and for all people grow and overflow” (1 Thess. 3:12)
