Qualities of Greatness

Jesus told His apostles, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” (Mk. 10:43). True greatness isn’t merely about achieving success, power, or fame. It’s about personifying virtues that transcend a purely personal ambition. Since a key quality of true greatness is humility, great individuals recognize their limitations and are open to learning – continually striving to improve without inflating their own importance. “Don’t demand an audience with the king or push for a place among the great” (Prov. 25:6, NLT).

Another essential is integrity. True greatness relies on strong ethical principles by prioritizing honesty and authenticity, thus gaining respect through consistent and trustworthy behavior. Paul wrote it: “We’ve not done wrong to anyone, nor led anyone astray, nor taken advantage of anyone.” (2 Cor. 7:2)

Compassion is also central to greatness, showing genuine care for others. Their empathy inspires others and strengthens communities. “The people were very kind to us. It was cold and rainy, so they built a fire to welcome us.” (Acts 28:2)

Resilience is another trait of greatness. Challenges and setbacks are inevitable, but those who are truly great persist through difficulties, learning and maintaining a sense of purpose. The 17th Century poet, John Milton, explains it: “with Atlantean shoulders, fit to bear.” That reminds me of what the Hebrew writer said about Jesus: “Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.” (Heb. 12:2)

Selflessness is also a defining trait here because greatness is not so much about personal gain but about contributing to something larger than oneself.

“Anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.” (Matthew 5:19)
