Confidence in the Workplace

Confidence is a feeling of self-assurance arising from one’s own abilities.  Having this ability to be confident is not something you are born with.  Some seem to have the ability to appear confident and act as though it is easy, where others struggle.  Confidence is something learned and something that takes practice.  There are many ways to improve your confidence skills in the workplace, here are a few tips to help you on your quest.

Knowledge – Take the time to research your positions on policies and programs that you plan to implement so you know them backwards and forwards.  Learn the newest research and stay current.

Repeat – Perform tasks and make decisions and then take the time to reflect on those decisions and determine if they were handled appropriately or if you could improve.  Doing things, the way you have always done, does not make them the best way to get the job done.  Think outside the box and always be prepared to make changes.

Focus on Strengths – When you are trying to build confidence within, focus on what you are good at and build upon it.  Know what you are good at and work to improve and hone that wonderful skill.  This will be the sure-fire way to feel successful and boost confidence.

Improve – Learn new skills and try to see others strengths and repeat what they do.  Go to seminars, watch videos, and learn the tricks of the trade.  Learn skills that will help with time management and customer service.

Ask Questions – Some people are afraid of not knowing the answers and won’t ask questions, which is detrimental in business.  You must ask questions if you are unsure of the issue at hand.  You must go to the source and figure out the issue and what things can be done to fix it.  Never be afraid to say you don’t understand, be afraid of assuming you know something and making the wrong decision based on that assumption.

Be a Finisher – Tell people you will finish the task that you start.  Voice your goals to everyone, so they will hold you accountable for finishing the task.  This is an excellent way to hold yourself accountable and ensure you give the results that the customer desires.  This vocal confidence also helps gain the respect of your colleagues and employees.

Appearance – Remember to smile at the people you meet throughout the day.  The attitude you display to others is an indication in your confidence level.  Ask people how their days are going and put a pep in your step when you walk around the office.  Happy, confident people are contagious and your confidence will shine through.

Confidence is an important skill to have as an adult, but even more important in the workplace.  People want to work for bosses who command a presence and display a quiet confidence.  Clients want to hire a business with confident individuals who know how to get the job done.
